Holiday Inspiration – Zermatt

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

Tucked at the head of a valley in the far South of Switzerland, Zermatt is one of the world’s most famous mountain resorts. Dominated by the iconic Matterhorn, the town’s architecture ranges from ancient wooden barns to opulent Victorian-era hotels to cutting-edge contemporary chalets. Dotted around the hills above the town are several picturesque satellite hamlets including Findeln, Furi and Zum See where you can eat in some of the Alps’ best mountain restaurants.

The skiing in Zermatt is some of the best in the world. The three main ski areas of Sunnegga, Gornergrat and Schwarzee/Klein Matterhorn are interlinked by a state of the art lift system and an “International” ski pass gives you access to the Italian resorts of Cervinia and Valtournenche. The 22-kilometre run from Klein Matterhorn down to Valtournenche is not to be missed. Also not to be missed is lunch in one of the many excellent restaurants on the Italian side, especially if you have had your fill of hearty Swiss mountain fare, however excellent.

Zermatt and Cervinia’s network of pistes is enough to satisfy many holiday visitors. Less well known is the resort’s extensive and challenging off-piste skiing. One word of advice – avalanche risk and glaciated terrain make this a potentially hazardous area so hire a guide or hook up with a local to find the best powder in safety.

Zermatt is also a mecca for ski tourers and alpinists and the town is often just as busy in the height of summer as in winter as climbers, walkers and mountain bikers come to enjoy the giant mountain playground.

Eat

Just taking in Zermatt and Cervinia’s best mountain restaurants would be worth a week’s holiday in its own right – though perhaps with most of the skiing done in the mornings. Zum See, Chez Vrony, Findlerhof, Bontadini and Chalet Etoile to name just a few serve up a delectable range of traditional mountain fare and modern European dishes. The Mediterranean is just a few hours by road or rail from Cervinia and the fresh seafood in some of the restaurants on the Italian side is out of this world.

Drink

Zermatt has a range of watering holes to suit every taste. The Hennu Stall on the resort run down from Klein Matterhorn offers a truly memorable après ski experience and the Papperla pub is always busy in the late afternoon and early evening as season workers, ski instructors and tourists get stuck into the offerings from the indoor and outside bars.

For those in search of a more sophisticated drinking experience, the Snowboat bar down by the river or the Vernissage lounge next to the ice rink serve up drinks and cocktails in stylish surroundings. The Snowboat has a sunny rooftop terrace and the Vernissage – designed by the ubiquitous Heinz Julen – also has a cinema which doubles up as a live music venue.

Ride

When snow conditions are good there is great freeride skiing and boarding to be had in the “Garten” area below the Matterhorn, in the trees below Schwarzee and over on Sunnegga to name just a few. For the intrepid skier prepared to don touring skis and skins, the Schwarztor route off Klein Matterhorn down to the Gornergletcher is a classic run, especially later in the season, but watch out for crevasses and holes in the glacier. There is also some excellent off-piste on the Italian side – Bontadini couloir will demand your full attention and there is wonderful tree skiing above Cervinia itself.

If all that isn’t enough there are limitless heliskiing opportunities in and around Zermatt and snow parks at Trockener Steg and Bontadini if you fancy youself in the halfpipe or off a big kicker or two.

Stay

If you’re looking for a stylish, centrally-located place to stay which won’t break the bank then Chalet Gmatchi is hard to beat. Alternatively, if you are looking for the best accommodation, catering and service that money can buy try Chalet Les Anges up in the exclusive Petit Village area.

Relax

For a memorable relaxation and pampering experience try the spa at the Mont Cervin Palace hotel which offers every treatment imaginable and has a sauna, steam room, swimming pool and even an ice grotto.

If this has whetted your appetite for a visit then get in touch to arrange a stay at one of our range of chalets and hotels and plan what could turn out be one of your best mountain holidays ever.

Heinz Julen on Art, Inspiration and Architecture

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Raised in the picturesque mountain town of Zermatt, Heinz Julen was from the very beginning destined to be different. He was named after Henry Heinz, creator of the world’s best-loved tomato ketchup, who was a frequenter of his father’s restaurant and close friend. Heinz Julen was born on the 29th February 1964.

Portrait of Zermatt architect Heinz Julen

Through living in Zermatt, Heinz was able to craft a special relationship with his surroundings which enhanced his sense of spirituality. This can be seen in his art where his personality and soul manifest themselves in his designs and creations.

Heinz has had an incredible career and has accomplished many extraordinary feats, from sculpture exhibitions in Zurich through to designing and even part-building hotels. He is a true artist and has, on occasion, experienced differences of opinion with business partners, some of which have been the catalyst for further creativity.

In February 2000 he opened a hotel with promoter Alex Schärer, which closed just seven weeks after opening, after which Schärer proceeded to tear down any trace of the artist, apart from the shell of the construction. The demise of this 27 million euro venture spawned Heinz’s “The Last Room of a Vision” exhibition, which was presented at galleries – including the Vernissage in Zermatt – and exhibitions throughout Europe in the following years.

The Zermatt Loft by Heinz Julen

We sat down with Heinz to hear his views on architecture, find out where he seeks his inspiration and to hear about his much anticipated and debated project which could see a hotel at the top of a mountain in Zermatt.

Who or what inspired you to study and practice architecture?
The old Valaisan houses on their legs, function follows design. The Valser culture.

Do you have a different method for approaching design in the mountains as opposed to a city like Amsterdam?
I’m always looking for the truth and simplicity behind the design. So whether in Amsterdam or Zermatt my thought process doesn’t change.

Do you try to inject a personality into your projects and do you have any consistent characteristics that you keep coming back to with design?
I belive its the creator’s soul, that stays and remains in a product – the more the creator has found his own way and knows himself, his own soul, the more his objects carry this in them. Therefore they are able to be recognised immediately.

When you go away on holiday do you look for similar styles to those that you design yourself or something completely different?
I let myself be surprised by what I find. The surprise is much more fun, if you did not look for it first.

Are there any designers or architects that you really admire and take inspiration from?
Well I am maybe more inspired by artists like Frank Stella and Ore Chamberlin – but also Daniel Spoerri the Swiss artiste changed my way of thinking many years back.

What are your favourite structures both in and out of the mountains?
The opposite, the sea, the flat. The calm.

A lot of people are talking about the project to create the highest hotel in the Alps on the Klein Matterhorn, are you able to give any insights into your ideas for this design?
Well, with this project I want to create a dream in peoples head. I want to make them dream of an almost unrealistiqe idea. I want to create places, where people dream of and picture when they hear others talking of it.

It will be like a space station, only much more sustanible in an ecological condition. The whole project will be powerd by solar panels, and will be self-sufficient. Looking out over 200 houses in Zermatt, a tower on top of a mountain, is a very simple idea, that is easy to remember and to place. All the positive and negative pilosophical reaction that such a project creates is also very interesting. This make us think about tourism in the Alps on a much deeper level.

All these different reactions and talk of the project is a testament to the quality and ambition behind it.

Some of Heinz’s recent triumphs include Alpine Guru chalets, The Heinz Julen Penthouse which is the former home of our acclaimed interviewee and The Heinz Julen Loft which combines Manhattan loft living with nature in the mountain environment. You can stay in both of these properties through Alpine Guru.

Holiday Inspiration – Verbier

Friday, December 30th, 2011

Following on from our first Holiday Inspirations – Val d’Isere blog post we thought we’d give you some more ideas to spark your holidaymaking imaginations. This time it’s the turn of Verbier, a resort that both Alpine Guru directors have lived in.

Dre Israel snowboarding in the powder

One of our good friends in Verbier, Dre Israel, has some ideas on how to make your trip there extra special. Dre is a true mountain man who runs off-piste snowboard clinics and camps throughout the season. He can create custom adventures for you too so why not get a group of like-minded snowboarders together, rent a chic chalet and have a custom snowboard camp created for you?

Eat: Verbier has numerous fine eateries. If you’re looking for something gourmet then your best bet is the Millenium or King’s, otherwise the Pergola has a wide variety of foods and is nice and cosy with its fire place for a more casual dining experience. For  Pizza fans Al Capone is the choice and they also do great pasta and lasagne.

Drink: Well, what can I say about this one? Verbier has one of the best apres ski scenes in the Alps and if this is what you’re looking for then the Farinet is the place. For the wild child, Farinet’s apres has the live band atmosphere where girls in bras are frequently seen dancing on the bar before diving off for some crowd surfing – not to be missed. If you’re the calmer type then the Farinet lounge bar offers a chilled out comfortable space to enjoy a cocktail or two.

Ride: Verbier is a high altitude resort with great snow conditions from mid November until the end of April. It is listed as one of the top ten off-piste resorts in the world and the pistes are great for families. If you come to Verbier then you must explore some of the hidden terrain that has made the resort a mecca for some of the best freeriders in the world. The back side of Mont Fort is a must but do take a guide because Televerbier do not blast for avalanches back there and it can be very dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Roaring fire at Chalet Inverno

Stay: for you and your guests we reckon that Chalet Inverno, which is just a short stroll away from the Medran lift station, would be just right – ideal for those wanting early starts and first tracks combined with quality services and chic alpine surroundings.

Relax: there are a few options for those wanting to relax in Verbier there is the Sports Center where they have jacuzzis, steam rooms, and saunas as well as a very large swimming pool. If you’re looking for treatments then the spa at the Nevai Hotel should be high on your list with its range of treatments, Turkish hammam (steam room), dipping pool and sauna.

Christmas Gadgets for the Ski Enthusiast

Monday, December 19th, 2011

Whilst some may say it’s a little late, it is most likely that many of you are running around still trying to find gifts. Or perhaps you’re yet to even start the running. We’ve been searching around the web a lot recently and have found a few gift ideas that would make for great presents for the mountain enthusiast in your life. Will you be saying “I want one of those?”

1. The Hammerhead

A lightweight performance sledge to crush the competition? If you’re the daring type or perhaps just plain foolish then you might enjoy shooting off down the slopes on a sledge. This extreme performance sledge even comes with add-ons and extra features – kind of like a super car. The basic version of the Hammerhead (the sport VLD to be precise) with handling like, say a Golf TDI, comes in at just shy of $US200, but if you want the all singing all dancing model you’ll have to add another $US150 to that figure. That does give you a sledge with the performance of a KTM street racer through the turns though.

Or if you prefer you could try this new ‘bobsleigh‘ from Porsche, which we must say is rather stylish at a mere £180 seems like a bargain.

2. Recon Instruments MOD Live

Say it isn’t so? Unfortunately we can’t. Yes the time has come for a car dashboard with video game style icons to be incorporated into a pair of goggles. While this may seem like an idea that is either slightly over elaborate or perhaps a touch dangerous, we still want them. Features include a speedo, navigation system with location intelligence, mileage, camera connectivity (rear view mirror anyone?) and even jump analytics.

3. Otter Box

The Otter Box is a shell and protective cover for your gadgets, from iPhones through to iPads and even the Blackberry. Whilst these are neither as expensive nor as thrilling as the previous items, they are certainly beneficial to both the mountain man and woman. Some of the Otter Box range protect from the weather (including water and snow, obviously) and they’re crush-proof and therefore especially good for beginners and those who are liable to frequent falls and tumbles. These are only sold in the USA but they’ll ship to the UK and Europe so fear not, although we’re probably a little bit late telling you that now if you want one for Christmas.

Holiday inspiration – Val d’Isere

Monday, December 5th, 2011

If you’re looking for some ideas to make your ski holiday incredible this winter then look no further than Val d’Isere for the first stop of the Polo Masters Tour. The BMW Polo Masters 2012 Val d’Isere will take place over four consecutive evenings, from 11 to 14 January.

2 horses and riders attacking at Polo Masters

One of our friends in Val d’Isere, Ceri Tinley, who also happens to operate some of the finest chalets around has some ideas that can make your break extra special:

Eat: try taking lunch at the Tete du Solaise which is at the top of the solaise lift and then head to La Becca for a glamorous and sumptuous affair with a delicious menu and incredible wine list, it has truly earned its Michelin star this summer.

Drink: Before you head to the restaurants have a cocktail in the lounge at Avenue du Lodge then after your meal try the newly refurbished Dicks T Bar where it gets a little livelier into the early hours.

Ski: for those die hard ski enthusiasts who want to get stuck in straight away head over to the Casacade Express lift to access Pissaillas Glacier on the Fornet ski area and ski down the Cascade and Pillaillas runs where the snow is usually in abundance and in fabulous condition. There’s a new restaurant at the bottom of the Cascade ski lift offering BBQ’d delights on the sunny terrace. For those of you looking to glide in more steadily you can take a scenic route around the Solaise area starting at Madeleine Express and ending the day at the Tete du Solaise.

Stay: for you and your guests we suggest the magnificent Chalet Himalaya The chalet can be rented exclusively for up to eight guests, with an additional two suites for four more on request. We’re offering this property from the 2nd – 15th January for £52,715 and that includes everything from a chauffeured vehicle to champagne receptions and exquisite dinners prepared by your chef.

Stunning pool at Chalet Himalaya

Relax: Your chalet has great spa facilities with swimming pool which is half indoors, half outdoors with Jacuzzi jets and swim jets and a floor which rises to close it at the touch of a button, a sauna and massage room but you could also venture to the Barmes de l’Ours and get a full body massage or for those who prefer to relax out of the spa you could enjoy gliding around the outdoor ice rink in the centre of the resort.
