Luxury Ski Holidays in Davos

A pioneer of winter sports, Davos is one of Europe’s oldest ski resorts having built the world’s first T-bar lift in 1934. Set in a high, flat-bottomed valley in the Graubunden region of the Swiss Alps, luxury ski holidays in Davos offer extensive slopes, good cross-country trails and plenty of activities to do other than skiing too. The resort shares its slopes with its famous neighbour Klosters, and is well-known for its conference facilities, hosting the World Economic Forum each year.

Being a city, Davos is bigger than most ski resorts with a wide choice of bars and restaurants. Whilst hotels and apartments tend to dominate the market, there are plenty of high-quality luxury chalets in Davos too. Davos-Klosters has four mountains - Parsenn, Jakobshorn, Rinerhorn and Madrisa - all easily accessible via lifts, cable cars and funicular railways.

Non-skiers will not be disappointed on a ski holiday in Davos either. The city has excellent sporting facilities including Europe’s biggest natural ice rink, a leisure centre, a bowling-bar-bistro, and a climbing wall. There are plenty of attractive walks to enjoy, romantic horse and carriage rides around the enchanting valley and tobogganing on Rinerhorn and Schatzalp.

In summer the resort doesn’t rest, with extensive outdoor activities on offer including golf and water sports.

Skiing in Davos

At 1560m, Davos is the highest town in Europe with 320 km of piste to explore thanks to the link with the smaller village-like resort of Klosters.

Davos and Klosters together offer six separate sectors, the largest of these being Parsenn. Accessible from both Davos Dorf and Klosters, Parsenn offers long, wide slopes and some fantastic off-piste terrain. It is also home to one of the longest runs in Europe (12 km from Weissfluhgipfel to Küblis.)

Whilst the Davos- Klosters ski area is not well known for its beginner slopes, the resorts do offer a few beginner areas with nursery slopes both at Bolgen (at the bottom of the Jakobshorn) and at Bünda near the base of Parsenn.

Klosters ski area in particular is a favourite with intermediate skiers with an extensive network of wide blue and red runs. Many intermediate slopes can be found around Parsenn however for less crowded intermediate skiing, Madrisa and Rinerhorn are both good alternatives.

The Davos-Klosters ski area has plenty of challenging terrain for advanced or expert skiers including some fantastic off-piste terrain as well.

Several luxury chalets in Davos offer direct access to the slopes but there are also excellent transport links to all sections of the ski area too.

Davos Cross Country Skiing

As well as on-piste skiing, ski holidays in Davos are renowned for offering 172 km of free cross-country trails that start from the town and lead to the quiet side valleys of the resort. Throughout the summer months, Davos stores snow under a layer of woodchip which is then used to prepare the cross-country trails for October.

Along the Landwasser, skiers can take their dog with them to ski on three specially marked dog trails, or enjoy 2.5 km of night trails illuminated daily until 9.30 pm. For beginners looking to improve their fitness, the Herzloipe trail is a short circuit without climbs to ease beginners into this sport. Davos also has the Davos Nordic Park which provides special free cross-country skiing courses where skiers can learn the right technique and watch demonstrations of both skating and skiing cross-country.

Davos Night Skiing

If you are looking to try something a little different on your luxury ski holiday to Davos, then why not experience a spot of night skiing? A range of floodlit areas allows you to enjoy sports and fun until late into the evening. Nighttime skiing is available at Rinerhorn in Davos and Selfranga in Klosters. Tobogganing takes place on Schatzalp and Rinerhorn in Davos.

Family Ski Holidays Davos

As well as there being a number of family-friendly chalets in Davos, the resort also has numerous family-orientated activities to enjoy during your ski holiday. Families are an important part of the ski experience in Davos with dedicated kids' play zones that are perfect for young children. Madrisa is the most family-friendly ski area whilst Parsenn is perfect for families skiing together. Teens and young adults can usually be found at Jakobshorn with its extensive snow park.

There are fantastic off-slope facilities in Davos, including ice skating and ice hockey. Sledging is available on eight sledge runs and there is a climbing wall with a bouldering section in the Färbi sports hall. Fatbike tours are available on Pischa and there are plenty of marked winter hiking trails too.

Best Restaurants in Davos

From diverse international cuisine to local specialities, Davos has a wide variety of restaurants to choose from. If you are looking for a mountain restaurant with a view, the Panorama Restaurant Schatzalp is a must. Situated next to the top station of the Schatzalp cable car, Panorama Restaurant Schatzalp lives up to its name with breathtaking views of the Alps. In the day, enjoy hearty lunches or a cup of coffee with a slice of homemade cake. At night, an à la carte menu of local and Mediterranean specialities is available accompanied by continental wines.

For à la carte fine dining in the centre of Davos, head to Chesa Seehof in Davos Dorf. Part of Hotel Seehof, expect classic dishes reinterpreted with a twist. Specialties include beef tartare and veal escalope with potato salad and cranberries.

If Michelin-star dining is a must in Davos then La Riva is the place to be.

Apres Ski Davos

If you like to wind down after a busy day on the slope before heading back to your luxury chalet in Davos, then head to the well-known apres-ski spot, Jatzhütte on the Jakobshorn mountain. Jatzhütte is THE place to party on the slopes with plenty of opportunities to dance daily to international DJs and live music acts.
