There’s still time to travel to Switzerland’s most exclusive winter sports resort for the 44th edition of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, taking place at Piz Nair in St. Moritz over the next two weeks. Attracting winter sports enthusiasts from around the world, the event sees nearly 600 athletes from around 70 countries compete for medals in a variety of disciplines. We have already seen thrills and spills in the Super G but there’s plenty more action to come over the next week with the downhill and slalom events as well as the competitive team event. In addition to the sporting action there’s a variety of entertainment on offer from live music acts and DJs to art displays and air shows, and if that’s not enough to entice you, St. Moritz is also renowned for its world class mountain gastronomy so you can be sure to wine and dine in style.

Taking place on the resort’s frozen lake against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains is the prestigious White Turf international horse racing event. Attracting over 35,000 visitors, from racehorse owners, trainers and jockeys to locals, equestrian aficionados and the great and the good from around the world, White Turf is a tradition dating back to 1907 and is a thrilling spectacle not to be missed. There are three types of races – trotting, flat and skijoring but the main event is the ‘Longines 78th Grand Prix of St. Moritz’ which takes place on the final day. In addition to the horse racing is a wide and varied programme of entertainment including live music and a display of spectacular sculptures and paintings by fascinating artists. An event to see and be seen, expect fur coats to be out in force and champagne to be flowing by the gallon!

Built in 1884, the Cresta Run is a natural ice skeleton toboggan track approximately ¾ mile in length, starting in St. Moritz and winding its way down a narrow valley to the village of Celerina. Operated by the St. Moritz Tobogganing Club (one of the few remaining men’s clubs), the run opens shortly before Christmas and closes at the start of March. Over thirty high-calibre races are held throughout the season with the Grand National being one of the highlights, featuring the best Cresta skeleton riders who reach speeds of up to 140km/h.
23-25 February 2017
Since 1988, St. Moritz has hosted the most prestigious (and perhaps unusual) event in the Swiss cricketing calendar. The Cricket on Ice Trophy Tournament takes place on the ice and snow of the frozen lake, attracting international players and high-flying business people from all over the world. This year four teams will compete in a 20 over round-robin tournament in often challenging conditions for the coveted trophy. Admission is free and spectators are encouraged to soak up the sun whilst enjoying the delicious refreshments that St Moritz has to offer.
3-5- March 2017
At the beginning of March, Corvatsch hosts the FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup for the fifth time in a row. Up to 110 athletes from 23 nations will take on the adrenaline-inducing slopestyle course, demonstrating a series of acrobatic tricks and flying up to 30 metres in the air. Spectators can follow the action alongside the course and on the giant screen in the Event Village at the Murtèl middle station.
